DUST 514 Could Change The Way We Think About Online Gaming

DUST 514 is an MMOFPS set in the EVE Online universe.

When I first heard about Ubisoft’s Far Cry “multi-player online universe” I mused:

“What I’ve always wanted to see in an online first-person-shooter and what I haven’t seen yet is an attempt to stage a real online FPS war. No NPC characters at all, no bots. The players would control everything and would rise up in the ranks. As you rose higher in the ranks, you’d be in charge of other players or entire regions, setting strategy and calling in air support and so forth. Get even higher, and you’d have to coordinate supply chains or risk letting other players run out of ammo, grenades, and medkits.”

Now CCP Games, the Icelandic developer behind EVE Online, is releasing DUST 514, a massively multi-player online first person shooter that takes place in the same sprawling universe as EVE, a more traditional MMORPG with a science-fiction twist. In EVE players compete across a single universe, vying for power in an organically evolving terrain.

There are several really intriguing and exciting things to note when it comes to DUST.

For one, it’s not only set in the same universe as EVE, but players from both games will be able to interact with one another. For instance, someone playing in DUST could purchase items from someone playing in EVE, or call in air support or other assistance. Players in EVE can hire mercenaries from DUST to help fight their wars.

In other words, this isn’t your typical Call of Duty first-person-shooter experience.

DUST is coming exclusively to PS3, which is an interesting choice given that EVE is a PC-only title. And perhaps most interesting of all is the fact that DUST 514 will be free-to-play, with additional items and gear available for purchase within the game.

DUST will unfold alongside the player-determined events of EVE Online, with gamers in DUST fighting for and against players in EVE as they seek galactic riches and power.

I have to say, this is just about the coolest idea I’ve heard in gaming in a good long time (and not just because I’ve been pining for something like this for a while now.)

Here’s how Alex Rubens described his preview of the game:

The presentation display went to split-screen: one side showing DUST 514, the other EVE Online. As fans began to whisper, the presenter mentioned that they took a shared contract before the demo started and that they were in a temporary alliance. The player in DUST 514 targeted a large group of enemies defending a single location for an Orbital Airstrike. A target appeared, and the EVE player fired on the planet from his ship. The audience went wild as shots came down from the sky, destroying everything in the targeted zone.

Players in completely distinct games, working together to accomplish a singular goal: this is rare, if not a first. And CCP noted that this was something that they implemented for the first time in the office a few weeks prior; and that their ideas for cross-platform combat are aimed far beyond bombarding console gamers from space.

I do think it’s a shame that DUST is going to be a PS3-only title. Given the fact that EVE is a PC franchise, it would have made sense to at least release the game on Windows (and honestly, on Xbox 360 as well.)

And there is certainly some cause for concern for EVE players especially. Even CCP is willing to admit that much.

“This is not an unambitious project. There’s a lot of peril if we do things wrong, and not just in terms of the attitudinal side of things,” CCP’s chief marketing officer told Digital Spy.

“There’s a risk of getting the economy wrong. The EVE Online economy has been built for years, and people have a pretty good sense of what it takes to earn an ISK, how much time you need to spend mining or trading in the game to make money.

“What could happen is somehow in Dust we do something wrong, and you can earn ISK at a faster pace and there’s something unintended there and we accidentally have some hyperinflation in our economy.”

It’s neat to see this sort of bold mixing of genres, and perhaps creation of an altogether new genre, however. Even if there are risks, a far greater risk is that game developers stop innovating and fall back on the tried and true.

Here’s hoping DUST 514 is a smashing success. It’s a great idea, and if they can get the execution right, I think it could really change the way we think about the first-person-shooter genre, but also the MMORPG genre. Bringing free-to-play games to consoles is also probably going to feature more prominently down the road, so this should be a really fascinating test-case.

‘The Hunger Games’ used as bait by hackers

Hunger Games

The “Hunger Games” heroine Katniss is apparently catnip for hackers.

Cyber criminals have been dangling the lure of of free online copies of the blockbuster film to trick young fans into downloading malicious software onto their computers.

In the two weeks preceding the movie’s March 23 premiere, experts identified some 37 instances of offers for illegal movie downloads that were “poisoned.”

“It’s not actually the ‘Hunger Games’ footage, it pretends to be that,” said Marian Merritt,
internet safety advocate for Norton, industry giant Symantec’s brand of anti-virus software. “It’s posted merely for the purpose of tricking fans.”

Merritt said cyber criminals often use big cultural events — such as the royal wedding or the release of the “Twilight” movies — to dupe the unwitting into downloading a bit of malicious software onto their computers.

Such programs allow hackers to gain access to the information stored on that computer, infect other computers on the home network and beyond, Merritt said, or use the computer as a “bot” (short for robot) to launch a variety of attacks, such as sending out spam or being part of a coordinated “denial-of-service” attack.

“The ‘Hunger Games’ in part is of appeal to the youngest kids,” Merritt said. “We find that kids are particularly vulnerable to this kind of threat, the poisoned search result threat.”

Merritt urges parents to talk to their kids about steering clear of such online promises of sensational content, such as leaked videos. Norton and other companies, of course, make software that’s designed to prevent this problem. A free version of Norton Safe Web Lite can be found here.
